the birth of Poppy. video style!

So, Poppy is two now... but I feel it is never too late to help the fight to normalize birth!

When I was pregnant with her I had all these grand plans of how my home birth would go. A beautiful lit room, warm tub, light music, candles lit. All setting the tone for a beautifully edited video that would capture the moment we got to meet our sweet girl! Well...candles were lit and the music was playing... :)

Poppy Grey just came too darn fast! from my first contraction to the last was one hour flat! There was not an extreme intensity that told us her birth was near either. Nope, just some easy breathe through contractions and me chit chatting away and then BOOM!

Andy did have his iphone handy during this anticlimactic (or so we thought) time. So now today, these clips have given birth to my very own, badly edited, poor quality, birth of my sweet baby girl into our tiny, shallow, luke warm tub!

by far one of the best days of my life!

Enjoy :)

disclaimer: I am having a baby here but nothing overly graphic is shown(that is her head sitting there for awhile) . Oh and, do not try and watch in full screen, it makes the quality even worse!

reminiscing

Poppy is almost 11 months old and I find myself looking back on this time last year...
Where does a year go? Can my baby really almost be at the one year mark!? With the second baby you know all too well how fast it really goes and I find myself clinging to these moments...

A year ago we were having my pregnancy/family photos done.
we were documenting our family becoming a family of four

Alomae was so tiny...
and Poppy was making mama oh so big!

I am so thankful for Poppy's presence in our family,
this face brings me so much laughter & joy!

I know I have been absent from here. Summer has been crazy. but I am ready to catch up and document my babies lives (looking back on their photos on here is something I will cherish forever!)

I am also working on a little natural pregnancy/living/parenting site that I will hopefully be launching in the near future!

feeling thankful for my family and hugging my babies tight tonight,

one year ago

It is hard to believe it's already the 4th of July again! The 4th is one of my all time favorite holidays and not because of fireworks...

Every year we head off to our beach cabin for a few days with my dad and my sisters family and we just have so much fun!

It's crazy to look at this picture and think one year ago that Poppy was just 25 weeks in my belly and now she is almost 9 months old.

And do not even get me started on my sweet Alomae. One year ago she was a sweet little toddler and now she has grown into a little lady, a big girl!

So much happens in a years time! (babies, please stop growing SO fast)

I love my little family so very much and feel beyond blessed to call them my own...

the birth of Poppy

IMG_0887

Poppy is just over 48 hours old now and I am sitting on my couch while she lays asleep on my shoulder and Alomae is upstairs asleep. It is incredibly quiet in my house and the perfect time to write down Poppy's birth story...

it's a quick one...

Wednesday October 12th was just another day of being pregnant! I feel like the only change that day was the Peace I felt from fully surrendering my pregnancy as written about here. It's funny how once we surrender (and I mean really surrender) God sometimes just lets us have what we need!

I had been having Braxton Hicks contractions (just tightening, no pattern or pain) but nothing note worthy off and on for days. At around 6pm Andy left for SEVEN which is 7 weeks of prayer and fasting for the city of Portland that our church puts on every year. I joked as he walked out the door "Pray a new baby is born in portland tonight!" He looked at me like I was a little nuts and continued on his way!

I settled in on the couch with Alomae and decided to do the new iphone update. I plugged my phone in and let it do it's thing for the next hour or so... with 10 minutes left until I could use my phone, at 7:30pm my water broke! I could not help but laugh as I stood in my living room doing a little dance as I figured out where to go or what to do since my phone could not call out! Alomae just looked at me and smiled, not having a clue what was going on!

at 7:40pm I was able to unplug my phone and I ran upstairs to the bathroom where I made my calls.

call 1: to my sister who lives 3 hours away and would need to make the drive down!
call 2: to Andy
call 3: to Adele my midwife

My sister hit the road, Andy headed home, and Adele told me to call her when I wanted her to come!

At 8:15pm (ish) Andy arrived home and at about the same time my first contractions began. Nothing major and I could still talk through them as I walked around upstairs and made sure everything was ready and that Alomae would be okay (when I was in labor with Alomae my contractions were so intense that I could not focus or think for about 3.5 hours so I wanted to know everyone was good if/when I got to that place.)

At 8:20pm Adele and I were texting to try and coordinate when she should come. I told her that my contractions had begun but that I could still focus through them, that they were every few minutes and that I was fine! Her text back was "I am just going to come to you!" She headed to the birth center to pick up a better working doppler and arrived just as the clock turned 9:00pm.

during this time I just sat in my little bathtub (I thought it was way too soon to fill up the birth tub!) listening to my playlist of Patty griffin, Eastmountainsouth, & Rosie Thomas ("wedding day" was playing when Poppy was born!) and organized the folders on my iphone that the update had messed up (I did this until about 15 min before Poppy was born- I really did not believe I was in very active labor!) I would have a contraction, blow through it and then pick up my phone and be on my way until the next one came! Silly, i know!

While this was going on, (around 9:10pm now) Andy was trying to put Alomae to sleep but she knew something was up and was too excited to lay down! So out she came and hung out by the tub by me. Adele and Andy decided to hook up the hose and fill up my tub! But that was not going to work! We live in an old downtown NW apt and the sink was too old and could not handle the pressure so it instantly began to leak from the bottom! So the tiny bathtub it was...

Little did we know I would not be spending much more time in my tub! About 5 min later I began to feel pressure and told them I think she is coming! One uncontrollable push later Poppy's head was out and a minute after that our sweet baby was born at 9:18pm (1 hour after the first contraction began!)

It was crazy and I was laughing! I could not believe Poppy was already here and that my birth really happened like that!

Andy called my sister who was driving from Seattle to say "we have a baby!" I don't think she quite believed it until Poppy gave out her first cry for her to hear!

That very cry was the only part that scared Alomae, and she too began to cry! I asked her if she wanted to get into the tub with Poppy and I and she lit up and was happy as can be after that! (before you think gross, the water was still very clean because I did not birth my placenta for another hour, in which Alomae was not in the tub!) My second midwife Jennifer arrived about 20 minutes after the birth and both her and Adele were gone by 11:00pm!

it was fast, it was crazy, it was amazing! truly truly amazing!

I spent hours in the middle of the night unable to sleep from the adrenaline and pure awe of replaying the birth over and over in my head!

I trusted my body and it came through for me! It worked above and beyond what I knew it was capable of and I am so thankful to have such a beautiful experience and memory!

the art of surrender

I am learning this these days...

It's funny actually! I have worked in the pregnancy/birthing community for 5 years now and I have gotten so good at telling women to trust their bodies and that their babies will come when they are ready and to allow them the time to do so! I believe this all 100% too! I am just finding myself anxious though- nothing severe at all, but in a very mild way...

I know the Lord is teaching me right now the art of surrendering to Him and I am learning empathy for those I so often serve (it's funny that I am even saying all this because I am not even due for another 3 days, not to mention I think due dates are silly and I don't like to pay attention to them anyways!)

Really, it's more of a heart issue (and a uncomfortable bodily one!) The end of this pregnancy is not about me or my baby- It's an opportunity for the Lord to teach me patience, complete trust and surrender, as well as a chance for me to truly believe the words He speaks to me and the promises He holds!

I love that, while knowing so much about the physiological side of it all, He still has the ability to daily teach me new things about what it means to be entrusted with a life! A little life He has created and thought up and loves more then I ever can or ever could!

When will this baby come? I do not have a clue! And that is exactly where I need to be.... At a place where I just don't have the answer and I need to sit back, relax and let The Lord do His thing!

He is much better making these decisions then I am anyways...

39 weeks

wow
a place I never made it to before...

I cannot believe how fast this pregnancy went and how slow these last weeks are creeping by :)
isn't that the way it always works!

at 39 weeks...

I am losing my appetite
tired
having a hard time going from sitting to standing
waking up 10 times a night to go pee
staying home a lot! (poor alomae)
praying a lot
cleaning and re-cleaning
trying to keep the fridge stocked
oh and did I mention tired? :)

I am so looking forward to that first long snooze that happens right after the birth!
where me and baby get to snuggle in my bed and both recover from what we have both just been through!

Here are some good things to be doing at the end of your pregnancy
(for you mama's to be...)

take a calcium/magnesium supplement (make sure it's a good whole food one that has them together)
evening primrose oil (can be taken orally and "internally" towards the end... help soften cervix)
red raspberry leaf tea- good for your female organs

these things will just help prepare your body for labor- they wont hurt or put you into labor early in any way :)

I have been writing a lot on here trying to really record the end of this pregnancy because I know it is going to be done in just a moments time!

today is Andy's day off so we will spend a nice relaxing day together enjoying more of these moments (as a family of three)

I cannot wait to introduce my sweet new baby girl!

I wonder if I'll make it to a week 40 post :)

single digits

9 days
until I am "due"...

When you have your first baby 2 weeks early it is so fun and crazy to get to
play the waiting game...
will I make it to my due date? will I go beyond? will I have her tonight!?!

who knows!

I am excited at the prospect of a chubby baby right off the bat...
Alomae was 7 lbs 10 oz which is really good for two weeks early
and then in the first 5 days got down to 7lbs 2 oz

to me she was tiny!

I worked at a birth center where we rarely, and I mean rarely saw babies born
under 8 lbs and most were in the 9 lb range some upwards of 12 almost 13 lbs!

so a 7 lb baby was seriously small!

regardless of how big or small this baby is though, I know she will be
chubby in no time!

check out Alomae's 6 month thighs :)

breastfeeding does wonders ladies...

Anyone wanna take a guess when this baby will arrive? :)

the tub is up!

so many people have been asking me questions lately about
having a home birth.

"do you really have a special tub?"

"where exactly are you having your baby?"

questions like that and about all the logistics that go with.

I have officially been pregnant longer now with this baby then with Alomae
so I went ahead and set up the tub last night for safe measure and to take all pressure
off of Andy for when I go into labor- I want him to enjoy the moment and be there for Alomae and not be running around like a chicken with his head cut off :)

and here she is...
the tub!
she sure does take up a lot of room and I had to really move some stuff around
the girls room to make it fit in a comfortable way until baby makes her arrival!
(hoping it does not have to sit there for another 2-4 weeks- but who knows?!)

the eco birth tub!

look it has handles for position changes, a seat, even a cup holder!
luxury!

that is the tub liner sitting on the seat- I did not put it on yet because I don't want alomae to rip it or anything!

Just some of the supplies...

tarp, hose to run water from sink to tub, video camera, sitz bath herbs, and much more...

I have candles set up on the dresser too- you know, mood lighting! :)

So nice to have everything in the comfort of my own home!
then after she is born, the tub will be taken down and will be gone and all that
will be left is my sweet family (+1 new one!) and our own comfortable beds to snuggle in!

11 days until I am "due"

the Pumpkin Patch

our favorite time of year!
seriously!

(andy and I have been going since we were dating which makes this year #9!)

we look forward to the pumpkin patch so much!
this year we went on the first saturday because I didn't want
to miss it should baby come soon!

it was a perfect day!
sun was not shining but it was not cold and no rain
(which means no muddy feet!)

Alomae had so much fun!
on the way out we got coffee from Barista and some Pumpkin treats
(scones and muffins!)

At the patch we picked up some pumpkins, a jug of cider, some jam, honey crisp apples
and a fresh mini marionberry pie!

always striking a pose!
mama & alomae
daddy's turn!
all of our hands (two tiny ones soon to join!)
pumpkin scoping...

38 weeks, 14 days to go

another week gone by and another day closer to meeting my baby girl!

alomae came at 38+2 which is this Sunday...

I am not anticipating this baby coming so early given I am not suffering
from pre-eclampsia this time around!

I am healthy & know that having her stay in a little longer will do her some good!

I am still feeling good, still a little tender in the pelvis area but it's a good
pain because at least the discomfort is headed in the right direction...out!

her head is definitely engaged now and all that you can feel are her shoulders right above
my pelvic bone!

with this new engagement though, comes many trips to the bathroom- majority
being in the middle of the night! Oh how our bodies prepare us for middle of the
night nursing sessions!

I am simply trying to enjoy these last few days/weeks of being pregnant.
enjoying having her all to myself and enjoying my time with
alomae still being my #1 focus!

I will be documenting this birth with photos and video
(tastefully done of coarse!)

and hope to have a beautiful story to share with all as we
bring this new baby into the world!

soon soon soon!
